Watering Hole Attack refers to a form of cyberattack that targets groups of users by infecting websites that they commonly visit. The name watering hole attack is inspired by animal predators who lurk near watering holes, waiting for opportunities to attack desired prey. Similarly, in a watering hole attack, cybercriminals lurk near niche websites, looking for opportunities to infect the websites with malware.
